Leading the Way: Loblaw’s Journey Towards Zero Food Waste to Landfill

The Scale of the Problem: Food waste is a pressing issue with far-reaching environmental, social, and economic consequences. In Canada alone, nearly 60% of the food produced is lost and wasted annually, equivalent to approximately 11.2 million metric tonnes. This wastage not only represents a squandering of valuable resources but also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, landfill pollution, and food insecurity.

Loblaw’s Commitment to Action: Recognizing the urgency of the food waste crisis, Loblaw has made a bold commitment to reach zero food waste to landfill by 2030. This ambitious goal reflects Loblaw’s dedication to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility, as well as its commitment to supporting the well-being of Canadian communities.

Partnering for Impact: To achieve its zero food waste goal, Loblaw has partnered with Loop Resource, a leading sustainability consulting firm specializing in waste reduction and resource recovery. Together, Loblaw and Loop Resource are implementing innovative solutions to repurpose food not fit for human consumption, reduce methane emissions, and enrich crops and gardens. Closing the Loop: A Complete Cycle of Sustainability One of the key initiatives spearheaded by Loblaw and Loop Resource is the repurposing of food waste to benefit farmers, livestock, and crops. Farmers use surplus food items provided by Loblaw to feed their livestock and farm animals, reducing feed costs and promoting animal health and welfare. Any food that cannot be fed to animals is diverted to compost piles, where it feeds worms and microorganisms to enrich soil and improve agricultural productivity. This complete cycle of farm to table and table to farm represents a holistic approach to sustainability that benefits both the environment and society. The Impact of Sustainable Practices: By supporting sustainable practices like those implemented by Loblaw, we can all play a part in reducing waste and caring for our planet. Not only do these initiatives help to minimize food waste and mitigate environmental impact, but they also support local farmers, promote soil health, and contribute to food security. By working together to implement innovative solutions and foster a culture of sustainability, we can create a better future for ourselves and generations to come.
