Unveiling the Narcissistic Traits in Relationships

Ramona Narang sheds light on the dark side of narcissism in relationships

Ramona Narang delves deep into the intricacies of narcissistic behavior, emphasizing the detrimental impact it can have on relationships. Narang highlights how narcissists manipulate situations to avoid providing support or celebrating special occasions. They often make their partners feel guilty for even expressing their desires.

In her latest discussion, she uncovers a less-talked-about trait of narcissism—how these individuals systematically deny their partners’ needs and desires, making them feel guilty for expecting even the simplest of joys.

Narcissists have a peculiar way of handling requests—whether it’s about buying a simple pair of sunglasses or celebrating a birthday, their response is almost always a dismissive “no.” They mask their unwillingness to give under the pretense of financial constraints or the belief that their partners are already too indulgent.

“The minute you ask them for something, they’ll say they don’t have the money or push it to ‘next time.’ And when you bring up birthdays, they’ll turn it around on you, making you feel like a burden for even wanting to celebrate,” explains Ramona.

Even planning a holiday together turns into an ordeal. A request for a summer getaway with family is met with resistance, often disguised as financial prudence. “They’ll say, ‘I don’t have money to waste,’ making you feel guilty for even suggesting a break,” she adds. This calculated denial soon forces the partner into silence, retreating into a space where asking for anything becomes too exhausting. The ultimate goal? Control. By making their partners feel unworthy of celebrations or gifts, narcissists ensure they remain the dominant force in the relationship.

Recognizing these red flags early is crucial. Learning to identify patterns of manipulation and emotional withholding can save individuals from years of self-doubt and suppressed desires. As awareness around mental health continues to grow in India, it’s essential to highlight how subtle forms of emotional abuse impact one’s well-being. Understanding narcissism isn’t just about identifying toxic individuals but also about reclaiming one’s right to happiness without guilt.
