Celebrating India’s Timeless Roots in Sustainable Fashion and Conscious Living with Nimmit

Date:

At our previous Dharte Expo, Nimmit showcased India’s timeless roots in zero-waste, slow fashion, and artisan-led sustainability. Join us again on June 5th – Environment Day to celebrate conscious living, handmade traditions, and circular design.

Nimmit, a brand that resonates with the essence of “medium” in Sanskrit, has been a beacon of hope for artisans across India for 49 years. Through their unwavering commitment to upskilling and empowering artisan and women organizations, Nimmit has been instrumental in preserving India’s rich heritage while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

“In our 49 years of existence, we have worked with artisan organizations and women’s groups across India, upskilling them and developing products that embody circular design principles,” says, founder of Nimmit.

The concept of sustainability is deeply ingrained in India’s history, dating back to the 17th century. Traditional practices such as “rafoogiri,” the art of mending old cloth, were prevalent long before the modern-day emphasis on sustainability. “Rafu, or mending old cloth, exemplifies the true essence of sustainability,” explains.

Renowned poet Gulzar Sahab beautifully encapsulates India’s ethos of sustainability, emphasizing that sustainability extends beyond products to encompass our way of life. “Even our products, but also our life, is all about sustainability,” remarks.

India’s legacy of “slow fashion” transcends trends and consumerism. Through generations, garments have been passed down, cherished, and repurposed, fostering a culture of mindful consumption. Unlike the culture of disposability perpetuated by fast fashion brands, India has always advocated for environmental-friendly practices.

“We never threw away our garments; we passed them on to our siblings and cousins through generations. Landfills were never a part of our ethos,”

As the world grapples with the environmental impact of fast fashion, India’s age-old wisdom serves as a guiding light in promoting sustainable living. Nimmit’s unwavering dedication to preserving India’s heritage and embracing circular design principles underscores the nation’s pivotal role in championing conscious living and sustainable practices.

Together, let’s honor the traditions that beautifully intertwine sustainability with style.
