Dr. Nandita Shah

May 2026

Dr. Nandita Shah is one of the most consequential voices in India's plant-based health movement. A doctor by training, she founded SHARAN — the Sanctuary for Health and Reconnection to Animals and Nature — in 2005, and has since dedicated her practice to a single, demonstrable proposition: that chronic diseases now treated as life-long conditions can be substantially reversed when food and lifestyle are addressed at the root. In 2016, the President of India conferred upon her the Nari Shakti Puraskar — the highest civilian honour for women in India — in recognition of that work.

The SHARAN approach is precise. Through a 21-Day Health Retreat developed and refined over two decades of clinical practice, Dr. Shah and her team guide participants through a whole-food, plant-based protocol that has produced documented reversals in Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, obesity, and hypothyroidism. The protocol is deliberately simple — what to eat, what to leave out, how to move, how to sleep — but the simplicity rests on years of physiological evidence about how chronic inflammation responds to ordinary food made well. The retreats run in Auroville and at SHARAN-affiliated venues across India; online programmes extend the protocol to anyone with a phone and the willingness to try it.

Her 2018 book, Reversing Diabetes in 21 Days (published by Hay House India), translated the clinical protocol into a practical home guide and reached a far wider audience than the retreats alone could. Today the SHARAN community spans tens of thousands of patients in India and abroad — people who have either gone through a retreat, completed an online programme, or simply followed the book and brought their numbers down. Dr. Shah is a frequent speaker at TEDx events and international plant-based health conferences, where she presents the case for lifestyle-medicine reversal of chronic disease with the calm authority of someone who has watched it happen, patient by patient, for two decades.

SHARAN's full name — Sanctuary for Health and Reconnection to Animals and Nature — is the deepest signature of Dr. Shah's philosophy. She refuses to separate human health from animal welfare or ecological wellbeing; the plant-based protocol that reverses diabetes is also the protocol that reduces our footprint on factory farms and forests. For Dr. Shah, the body, the kitchen, the field, and the planet are one continuous system — and a healthy human is one who has remembered how to live as a guest within it.
